Medical vs. Therapeutic Massage
Not sure which you need? Here’s how they differ, what each costs, and how to schedule.
Massage terms are not used the same way everywhere. At Hands On HealthCare, medical massage uses focused techniques and protocols for a specific functional concern. Therapeutic massage is relaxation-focused care shaped around comfort, relief and well-being. Some people report feeling more relaxed or moving more comfortably after a session; responses and duration vary.

How the sessions differ
The same area of tension can call for a very different kind of appointment.
Medical massage
Begins with a specific concern affecting comfort, movement or daily function. The therapist selects techniques and protocols for that concern, uses feedback to guide the work and evaluates how the body responds between sessions.
Therapeutic massage
Is relaxation-focused massage shaped around comfort, nervous-system settling and overall well-being. It can ease general tension, support easier movement and sometimes create benefits that continue beyond the appointment.
The techniques and protocols are part of the distinction. Trigger-point therapy and other focused medical methods are not simply folded into a relaxation massage.
The session itself can be different
This distinction matters before you book—not only after treatment begins.
Explore how the sessions feel
During medical massage
The therapist concentrates on the areas connected to the concern. The session does not follow a routine full-body sequence and does not need to treat both sides symmetrically.
Active feedback is used to guide location, pressure, response and progression. Focused work can sometimes feel intense or briefly tender, although pain is never required.
During therapeutic massage
The session follows a broader, more continuous relaxation flow, shaped around your preferences and what feels restorative that day.
Communication guides pressure, focus and comfort without turning the relaxation session into ongoing clinical assessment.
Relaxation-focused therapeutic massage can do more than provide a pleasant hour. It may help ease general tension, promote relaxation and support a greater sense of comfort. How long those effects are noticed varies from person to person.
Medical and therapeutic massage compared
Same neck-and-shoulder tension, different goal
Read the neck-and-shoulder example
Medical goal
If tension keeps returning and affects posture, movement or daily function, the therapist uses focused techniques and protocols to work with the pattern over time.
Therapeutic goal
If the goal is to feel better today, the therapist may focus on tight areas, restore comfort and include broader work based on your preferences.
The location of discomfort does not determine the service. The purpose of the session, the techniques and protocols used, and the way the work is carried out all matter.

Medical massage therapy
Medical massage begins with a specific functional concern. The therapist selects appropriate techniques and protocols, considers how muscles and soft tissues may contribute to the problem, adjusts the work in response to feedback and looks at how improvement holds between sessions.
What the session may include
- Focused work connected to discomfort or restricted movement
- Attention to shortened, over-lengthened or poorly functioning muscles
- Fascia and trigger-point work when appropriate
- Active feedback to guide pressure and progression
- Changes to the techniques or protocol as the body responds
Massage therapists do not diagnose medical conditions. Medical massage can work within established medical guidance or functional goals when those are present.

Therapeutic massage therapy
Therapeutic massage is relaxation-focused, skilled hands-on care for general tension, everyday discomfort and overall well-being. Its broader flow is intended to promote relaxation and ease areas of muscular holding. Therapeutic approaches can also be combined within a session when appropriate; you and your LMT can decide what combination best supports your goals.
What the session may include
- A continuous relaxation-focused flow
- Pressure adjusted for comfort and nervous-system settling
- Attention to general tension without clinical treatment protocols
- Support for ease of movement and whole-body relaxation
- Communication about comfort and preferences
The immediate purpose is relaxation and restoration. Some people also report greater comfort or easier movement after the visit, but responses and duration vary.
